How we can Help the Planet: Part 8

Five ideas you can use to help the Earth:

  • Make your own coffee. Sure it doesn't seem like much, but if no one bought coffee cups that would be millions of less cups being thrown away each day. Sure there is still the problem of washing the mugs, but that brings me to my next tip.
  • Using the cold water before the shower to wash the dishes. The cold water that usually goes down the drain you can use to rinse your dishes instead of wasting it. It may seem dirty, but it is the same water that your dishwasher uses and if you use soap the water will be as good as new .
  • On the topic of showers, taking shorter showers couldn't hurt. I mean you get to save water and be more efficient with your time, its a win/win.
  • Speaking of saving, try donating any helpful organization. It can be for the environment, for people who are less fortunate, for a hospital studying cancer, or anything as long as it makes a positive impact on the world.
  • Lastly, speaking of the environment, try to plant a new plant something on your property. It can be as simple as a flower, although you should probably plant more than just one flower, it can be  a little bush/hedge, or it can be as large as a tree.

How we can Help the Planet: Part 7

Five ideas you can use to help the Earth:

  • Keeping track of where you go throughout the day and when you go there. This will allow you to figure out which things you can get done in one run, like grocery shopping and then clothes shopping if the two stores are close. Also, you can determine if any activities are unnecessary and do them less frequently, as well as figure out activities you are missing throughout the day, like exercise.
  • Don't focus on your personal gain if it affects something in a negative way. The biggest examples of this are oil companies that care more about money and monopoly of the product than about the environment. It is true that we are not at that extreme, but something I am sure we have all been guilty of at one time is littering because you don't want to carry around your trash until you find a trashcan.
  • Take the time to learn about a topic that interests you. This can be taken as both a way to help the environment or just yourself through education. Education is huge in most issues because it gets rid of  one of the main causes of any conflict, ignorance. If more people were curious and looked into global warming when the temperature was first starting to rise, maybe we would have made a bigger effort to solving the problem earlier and prevented our current problems.
  • Donate. By donating, you kill two birds with one stone. NOTE: Killing birds is not something I want you doing, it is just a saying. Anyway, it helps people who are less fortunate and it keeps people from wasting. If you are not motivated to donate by those two factors, its tax deductible too, so there is really no reason to not donate.
  • Go vegetarian a day a week. It takes 4.5 pounds of feed to cause a chicken to grow 1 pound. Beef eaters use 160 times the amount of land as a vegetarian because of all the space it takes to grow livestock as well as grow the food for livestock. that isn't even getting into some of the biggest issues. I know bacon is delicious, but sometimes you have to chose what is better for others than what is better for yourself. I mean, you don't have to go completely meat free, just cut back or have a meatless day or two.

League of Legends, the World, Drastic Changes

It is no surprise to people that things can go pretty south in the blink of an eye. It has happened several times in human history, most of which stem from natural disasters, but many others resulting from human involvement. Things are the same in video games too, more specifically League of Legends because that is the game that is being focused on here. Not only that, but things, even though the negative effects and positive effects might not be instantaneous, they are exponential and cause create disturbances in the environment or in the game.
In League of Legends, things can spiral out of control very quickly. One lost baron fight and all of a sudden you are behind. Got drag stolen and you don't get the fifth buff you desperately needed and the enemy is able to completely turn the game around because of it. Winning a fight and then getting turned on and dying in a matter of seconds. Winning a game and all of a sudden having a teammate disconnect. Or start off Worlds strong just to go a total 0-9 in the final day of groups (NA teams).
In League of Legends, there are gradual and exponential differences too. Start missing a few cs every few waves and your opponent gradually gets more ahead.  Play a team of early game champions and watch helplessly as the game slowly transitions into the late game. Get into an argument with a teammate that slowly gets out of control until someone leaves or refuses to help. Start getting lag spikes which causes your performance to slowly drop (always at the worst times too because your internet wants you to lose).
Now for the big question, what does this have to do with the World? Well the world has been around for billions of years, and over this time there are bound to be some gradual and nearly instant changes that changed the world.
Before I proceed, I classified instantaneous changes as anything that take a decade or shorter, and anything longer than that is a gradual and exponential change. Other instantaneous changes include events that are so drastic that the amount of time it took to take place is unbelievable, like mass extinctions.

Examples of changes that happened instantly:

  • Dinosaurs' extinction
  • The city of Pompeii being frozen in time by an erupting volcano (Mount Vesuvius).
  • Black Death wiping out a third of the European population in three years. As well as other epidemics.
  • Mass Extinctions
  • The Haitian Earthquake which effected 3.5 million people in a matter of minutes (220000 of those people were deaths).
  • World Wars 1, 2, and the Revolutionary War (many consider it the first real world war)

Examples of changes that happened over time:
  • Ice Ages
  • The continental shifts that move the continents from Pangaea to the continents' positions we know today.
  • Evolution of species
  • The advancement of Human technology.
  • Global warming.
Just so you have a perspective of how much global warming has affected us and the time period. The increase was about .8 degrees Celsius, or 1.5 degrees Fahrenheit, in a little over 100 years.

It is true that it is hard to stop many of these things because they are caused by natural disasters, but there are still many we can stop. We can prevent climate change, wars, epidemics (thanks to your current technology). we can even prevent some natural disasters like volcanic eruptions, because they show signs before erupting, and hurricanes, because they are seen before they actually affect the population, by evacuating the residents and preparing the area to minimize damage.
Long story short, both League of Legends and the Earth are made up of several small events that exponentially grow as well as nearly instantaneous events. And even though some are out of our control, like teammates in League of Legends and natural disaster on Earth, we can still do our best to minimize the negative events that take place.

League of Legends, the World, and the Butterfly Effect

I am sure you have all had that game where everything starts off bad and it just gets worse and worse as time goes on. The enemy team just gets further and further ahead and there is nothing you can do to stop it. No matter how hard you try, you just can't recover from the first blood you gave up in bot lane when you were trying to make a "lcs big play". On the other hand, you have probably been on the winning side of that scenario too .Same basic concept in life right? You do one wrong thing, do one assignment wrong, say one wrong thing to your parents, don't fully stop at a stop sign, etc. All of those little things as well as the billions of other little events that could happen in your everyday life could have a huge impact on your life. It could completely change the path you are going down both in a positive or negative way. It all has to do with the Butterfly effect and its effect on bot league and real life.
So what is the Butterfly effect. This is important to define because it is commonly confused with the Domino effect, and they ARE similar, but have a few important differences.

  • The domino effect is when something happens that directly causes something else nearby, which causes something else, which causes something else, etc. It is a linear causation of similar events that makes it clear to see what caused what and what will happen next. The severity of the effects rarely change, and if they do, it is by very little. It was originated during the Cold War when people believed one communist country would cause its neighbors to become communist, which would cause even more neighbors to become communist, etc.
  • The Butterfly effect is when where a small and localized change causes a drastic change, or effect, in another location. For example, the flap of a butterflies wings causing a hurricane on the other side of the globe. Clearly, this one isn't literally true, or else we would be having hurricanes all the time and all over the place, but the idea is still relevant. It was a part of Chaos Theory and is usually used to refer negative things.
I have already explained how it affects League of Legends  by using the example of giving up first blood and having your lane snowball out of control. However, how does this relate to the world? Well that is a very simple answer. It affects us everywhere. Every decision ever made has led us to where we are today and society continues to change based on people decisions, whether the changes are good or bad is up to society. For example, the discovery of paper was cool at first, but now we are cutting down billions of trees a year, a lot of which is going to paper. The invention of the car was revolutionary and allowed people to get from place to place faster without needing the train, but several decades later it is the lead cause of global warming. It even affects us in real life. Deciding to do drugs one time could lead to a life of drug addiction, giving up in a subject in school could lead to a limited future,  eating your problems away could lead to obesity, etc.
The Butterfly effect is everywhere. It is in everything we see, in everything we do, in everyone we interact with, and will be in everything in the future.  However, it can also be used to refer to positive things. For example, a small 150 view blog could inspire at least 1 person to make a real difference in the world, that person becomes famous and inspires millions more, and those millions of people get together and solve a large percentage of the world's problems. I know it is a bit ambitious, but if you are going to dream, might as well dream big.

The Martian, Facts about Mars: Part 1

Mars is one of the 2 main places people think about when they hear "space colonization", The other one being the Moon. It is a very interesting place filled with several things a lot of people probably didn't know about it. So let's get right into it with five fun facts about Mars, that I hope you don't already know:

  • First, Mare has about as much landmass as the Earth. Think about it, the Earth is much bigger than Mars, Mars has only 15% Earth's volume and 10% of Earth's total mass, but the Earth is made up of two-thirds water, so the amount of land that we can live on is much less than you would think for a planet as big as Earth.
  • As of September 2014, there have been 40 missions sent to Mars, with only 18 being successful. Many of them failed because they were sent before space travel was at its peak and moon expeditions were risky, which meant Mars missions at that time would have been a lot harder than it is today with our new technologies
  • A year on Mars is 300 days longer than it is here on Earth. Mars is much further away from the sun, which means it must travel a much longer orbit, and this isn't even including the speed at which it orbits at, which is also slower than Earth's.
  • Mars has 62.5% less gravity than Earth. It you want to go on a diet, I would recommend going to mars because it will make you feel a lot lighter. Not only that, but basketball would be a breeze and the hoop would have to be made two to 3 times higher. This also was believed to cause a problem for plants due to some of their short roots, but it was simulated and it did not end up being a problem after all.
  • The temperature on Mars ranges from -284 degrees F (-140 degrees C) to 86 degrees F (30 degrees C). This is due to the fact that it is further away from the sun, but due to its similar tilt, it has different seasons that all very in temperature greatly. Not only that, but the seasons are twice as long because the year is twice as long, so there are a lot of unpleasant days on Mars. However, I am sure that by the time we start colonizing Mars there will be an AC and a heater strong enough to make those climates more hospitable, Also, the temperature will naturally increase if we colonize because the atmosphere will increase in density and trap in some heat.

League of Legends can save the World: Part 2

The League of Legends scene is huge. It connects people all over the globe. From the Americas, to Europe, to the dominating Asia. There are players all around the world, those continents are just the only ones represented by the Worlds Tournament, sorry Africa, Australia, and Antarctica, better luck next time. Even if it doesn't include these places yet, there is no dispute that League of legends is one of the biggest, if not the biggest, game in the world.
The League of Legends community is a large and influential community that practically everyone has heard about. It can do what I am trying to do without any effort because it already has a preexisting community that can connect to tens of millions of people, whereas I have about 10 followers on Twitter. They have hired bands to write songs for them, most notable was, Imagine Dragons performing "Warriors" live and making it  a huge song on YouTube and number 1 on listen on repeat for several weeks if not months. It already has done charities through skin sales and has sent pros to visit kids in school, which was probably one of the coolest experiences of the kids' lives. What I am trying to say is, league has already established itself as an online powerhouse that has the potential for great things, not just in the video game world either.
Let's talk about the potential. Some of these ideas are things I can do, others are things that can be featured as a game mode or a skin, and others can just be announcements. The ones I can do are: comparing pro players to animals, talking about champions and giving facts about what animal they are or could have a skin designed for, make a blog post about the world while Worlds is taking place, and many more. The ideas that only Riot do, or at least figureheads in the community. For example, they could make champion skin ideas for human champs to look like animals on Earth day, they can make a new champion that interacts with the environment, like the trees, river, the walls, and the monster camps, or they could just announce a skin that, if purchased, will have a portion of the money donated to a charity. Many of these things are out of the average players control, but if enough people request it, Riot will probably do it. Believe it or not, Riot actual cares about its players XD.
League of Legends is like a piece of art, sure it is beautiful and inspire people, but it takes looking at the painting from the right angle to turn it from a good piece into a great one.

How we can Help the Planet: Part 6

Five ideas you can use to help the Earth:

  • Become truly motivated to make a difference in the world. You don't necessarily need to help the planet with this one, even though it is recommended, but the more people around the world who follow their dreams will make the world a better place as well as create a more pleasant atmosphere.
  • Collecting rain water is a great way to save water in your community. The water that we don't catch just goes down the drain and into the ocean, but if we catch the rainwater, we can use if for practical purposes, like watering the plants and turning the sprinklers off, giving your pet some water, and even boil it for human consumption.
  • Make sure to turn off everything when you leave a room for a long period of time. If you leave to go to the store or to go to an event, the lights, computer, air conditioning, fans, etc should all be off. It is just a waste of energy otherwise. The only argument is the air conditioning, but that uses a lot of electricity and cools a house fairly quickly once it is turned on, so you will only have to deal with a short period of heat in your house.
  • Don't rinse dishes before putting them in the wash. Not only do you save time, but you can also save up to 20 gallons of water by just allowing the washing machine to do what it was designed to do. It also saves energy because many people rinse with hot water, and water requires energy to heat the temperature many people like.
  • Run errands in bunches. Basically, if you know you need you need to go grocery shopping, but you also feel like you might want a book, a game, a new light bulb, or anything that you might need in the near future, buy it while you are out. Not only do you save time by not needing to go back and forth, but you also save gas and may not even have to drive to several places if everything you need is in one mall.

League of Legends can help World: Part 1

Before I start this off, I am using League of Legends because it is the biggest video game in the world, but this could apply to all video games.
This may seem like an interesting topic to focus on considering this blog focuses on the well being of the Earth, but hear me out. The world is a beautiful, and video games simulate worlds that individual people see as beautiful in there own ways. So why can't we all just love Earth? Why can't we all form a community, like the thousands of enormous gaming communities, and play a game on Earth? A game where we try to make the most optimal Earth we possibly can. I am going to go over different genres of games and how each one could have an impact on the world, but for now I am going to focus on video games as a whole.
People spend 3 billion of hours of games playing video games a week. Not a year, not a month, but a week. That is ridiculous and should be much less. I like video games, and believe me, I can sometimes get wrapped up in a game for hours if I don't pay attention to the time. However, that is not what I do all the time, I do other things, mostly school and sports, to help the community and make myself a better person. Every single person who spends too much time playing video games is just wasting their potential.
Enough hating on video game players. Don't worry, I am one too and I know that I play too much at times. Anyway, video games and social media have opened up a huge new world for us. I said before that every new game creates a new world for people to explore, and this allows people to ignore reality. Some people may use it as an escape from stress, some from family or personal issues, and other because they are addicted. However, whatever the reason, people are beginning to lose sight of the world we live in right now, and that is unacceptable. People have to realize that the world we live on now is the most beautiful world they have ever seen.
Video games have a hidden potential that could bring the entire world together without having to wait 4 years per event. Video games have formed great communities of millions of people, just imagine if these communities focused on something outside of the game. I know what they could do. They could stop pretending to be a hero in a game, and be a real hero and help save the world. Lets be honest, everyone, not just gamers, have dreamed of saving the world one time or another, and now with the power of communities formed by video games and social media anyone can do it.

How can we Help the Planet: Part 5

Five ideas you can use to help the Earth:

  • Stop and smell the roses, both figuratively and literally. Roses are an extremely beautiful part of nature, and it is something everyone can appreciate and love. Also, learning to love just one part of nature is a step in the right direction. The saying means "to appreciate life", which is something most people should do because we are human, the species with the most benefits in the world.
  • Write smaller. This helps save paper and usually smaller hand writing is more neat anyway. However, don't write too small, because it still needs to be legible. You don't want to get an F on a paper just because you were trying to save a sheet of paper, just keep the size of your handwriting in the back of your mind.
  • Take shorter showers. This one is a simple one that almost anyone can do. You don't have to sing, I mean perform, in the shower if it means you are in there for 10 minutes longer than you have to. A shower only needs to be 5 to 10 minutes and it can save several gallons of water as well as a lot of energy. Visit, http://www.greenlifestylechanges.com/take-5-minute-showers/, for more information.
  • Don't charge your phone overnight. This wastes energy because the phone is constantly being charged throughout the night and kept on. It also drains the battery of your phone faster, just like keeping a laptop plugged in at all times leads to its battery have a very short life when not plugged in.
  • Use a white board. A white board is a great place to write down notes without wasting any material. They last a long time and the markers last a long time as well if used correctly and not to color. It can have several notes on it depending on how big you right, the writing is easy to remove so you can have more notes, and it is magnetic, so you can stick papers to it to save room on your desk.

How Can we Help the Earth: Part 4

Five ideas you can use to help the Earth:
  • Use paper instead of plastic. Those trash islands in the oceans are made up of mostly plastic, especially plastic bags. Next time you get asked the question, "Paper or Plastic?", chose paper.
  • Bring your own cloth bags from home. It may be a hassle, but just imagine how much less trash would litter our ocean if every person brought their own bags to the store.
  • Use plastic cups. This may seem like it goes against things i have said in the past, but hear me out. Write your name on an individual cup and use that cup, rinse it out when you are done with it, then use it again next time. This works especially well with water, but works with all drinks. This saves water because it means you can fit more stuff in the washing machine, and it isn't extremely wasteful because you get several uses out of one cup.
  • Get more sleep. This one is more helpful to you but think about it this way, the more you are asleep, the less you can damage the environment. The less you eat, use electricity, produce waste, etc.
  • Take a moment before doing anything and ask yourself if what you are doing will damage the environment. For example, should you drive 5 minutes to the drug store or ride a bike/walk? Which one will damage the environment less? What you do should be based on the answer to the second question. Lastly, this tip should be used within reason. You should drive if you work 30 minutes away, you don't need to reuse everything, drive if you re pressed for time, etc.

Being Human on a Planet that is 4.5 Billion Years Old

Everyone reading this blog post is Human, unless someone trained their dog REALLY well, and we share this planet with approximately 8.7 million other species. We are not the fastest, the biggest, the most numerous, or the strongest, but we are the smartest. we have explored the majority of the surface of our planet and explored a lot of space outside of our planet. We have solved almost every problem we have come across. It was cold so we made fire, we wanted to explore so we invented the wheel, we got sick so we found an antidote, we wanted to entertain ourselves constantly so we made social media, etc. We have done a lot of good for ourselves, but at what cost to everything else?
First of all, we have polluted and damaged almost every part of the Earth if not all of it. we had devastating wars that make large amounts of land uninhabitable by anything without consequence, and we tend to believe that all other life on this planet is less than our own. Don't git me wrong, I love being a human, but we have done some pretty bad things. Worst part is, we have done so much bad in such a short period of time that the Earth can not keep up.
So the Earth has been around for 4.5 billion years, and humans have existed for 200,000 years. To put this into perspective, if you take the longest book in the world, Artamene with 2.1 million words, and compared it to the Earth's existence, human's existence wouldn't even be a paragraph. If the height of mount Everest represented the Earth's age, then the mountain representing our existence  would be shorter than a newborn baby.
You see, up until about 200 years ago, humans were not all that harmful to the environment, but these past 200 years have ruined that reputation. The Earth has had a system of taking care of itself for its whole life, it just takes a while. The dinosaurs going extinct and dust filling the sky after the meteor hit 65 million years ago took millions of years for the Earth to recover. An ice age lasts for thousands of years to go away. In fact, an increase of CO2 levels like ours today would take 5000 to 20000 years under normal circumstances. Yet here we are, raising the world’s average temp by 1.6 degrees Fahrenheit in 200 years and raising the oceans acidity by .1 pH, or lowering the pH by .1 on the pH scale. This means that, at this rate, at the end of the century most of the shelled species in our oceans will be extinct or endangered which will devastate our oceans. Not only that, but the increase of the Earth’s temperature also creates a lot of problems, most of which I went over in another post.
It is true that the Earth goes through stages and has always recovered from them, but up until now it has always had time to adapt. Humans have disturbed 4.5 billion years of evolution and sustainability in 200 years all because we want to make things better for us. Being a Human on Earth is great, but being any other species is miserable. If we don’t change our ways and learn to respect the 8.7 million other species we share this Earth with, we will bring about the end of the world.

How Can we Help the Earth: Part 3

Five ideas you can use to help the Earth:

  • Buy used items or donate things rather than throwing them away if they can still be used.
  • Don't turn things on/leave things on that you don't need. For example, you don't need a light on when it's daytime, just open the blinds.
  • Use the sprinklers less. Grass and most other plants only need to be watered by the sprinklers 3 times a week for periods of 30 minutes.
  • Use your computer for documents instead of paper unless paper is required. This may use energy and pollute, but it saves trees, which minimizes pollution.
  • This may be gross to some people, but the good old saying "Yellow is Mellow, Brown flush it Down". Believe it or not, but one toilet flush uses up to 1.6 gallons of water in new toilets. That is the amount of water a person is recommended to drink in 3 days.

How old is the Earth: Cool Math Ahead

Under conditions where no lead loss or gain from the outside environment has occurred, the age of the zircon rock can be calculated by the equations for exponential decay like so:
N_{\mathrm{Now}} = N_{\mathrm{Orig}} e^{-\lambda t} \,
where in this situation:
  • N_{\mathrm{Now}} is the number of Uranium atoms measured now.
  • N_{\mathrm{Orig}} is the number of Uranium atoms originally - equal to the sum of Lead and Uranium atoms measured now.
  • \lambda is the decay rate of Uranium.
  • t is the age of the zircon rock, which one wants to determine.
The above equation is thus equal to:
N_\mathrm{U} = \left( N_\mathrm{U} + N_\mathrm{Pb} \right) e^{-\lambda_\mathrm{U} t} \,
Which can be rearranged:
{{N_\mathrm{U}}\over{N_\mathrm{U} + N_\mathrm{Pb}}} = e^{-\lambda_\mathrm{U} t} \,
and simplified:
1 + {{N_\mathrm{Pb}}\over{N_\mathrm{U}}} = e^{\lambda_\mathrm{U} t} \,
The more common form of the equations finally are:
{{^\text{206}\,\!\text{Pb}^*}\over{^\text{238}\,\!\text{U}}}=e^{\lambda_{238}t}-1

(1)
and
{{^\text{207}\,\!\text{Pb}^*}\over{^\text{235}\,\!\text{U}}}=e^{\lambda_{235}t}-1

(2)
According to Wikipedia, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uranium-lead_dating,  this is the formula for Uranium-Lead dating. However, there is another way to put it that is simpler and works as well. The formula is (1/(2^x))=(Percentage of Uranium in the Zircon). Once you solve for X, multiply the X value by the half life and your answer is the age of the Earth approximately. This method is less exact, but it is much simpler and is very close to the age of the Earth.
However, there are four main problems with this method. First is the fact that we may not have found the oldest Zircon that still exists. Second is the fact that older Zircon may have been destroyed by any number of possible natural or man made forces. Third, if the Zircon that is being examined has been exposed to radioactivity throughout its existence, then the method is ruined because Uranium was added to the Zircon. Lastly, there may be more effective ways of measuring the age of the Earth that we have not discovered yet. These are the main reason why we do not know the exact age of our planet, and we never will. But one of you readers may be the one to discover the Earth's exact age.

How Can we Help the Earth: Part 2

Five Ideas you can use to help the planet:

  • Find creative ways to reuse things. For example, large Gatorade bottles can be a coin holder when cleaned out.
  • Take cold showers. Not only does this help you because cold showers are healthier for you, but it saves energy because you don't need to heat up the water.
  • Donate as much as you can. Those old shoes that are still in decent condition, donate. Those pants that are to short but are still usable, donate. Have some spare cash and want to do something good, donate. You get the point.
  • Save the napkins you don't use for later. No use in throwing away perfectly good napkins.
  • Recycle as much as possible. This may seem like common sense, but 90% of plastic water bottles are not recycled, let's work together to change that.

How old is the Earth: Cool Analogies Included

To start this off, there is no way to tell exactly how old the Earth is because it is SO OLD. We can get close and the closest we got was 4.5 billion years old give or take 70 million years. So if that is all you wanted to know, stop reading. But there are more facts ahead. I will be going over how we have determined the Earth's age and analogies to help you grasp how old the Earth is. So for those of you who stuck around, let's get right in to it.
Scientists have determined the age of the Earth by observing Lead levels in Zircon. Zircon is similar to Quartz and both are extremely resilient, so they can last a long time. The fact that Zircon can last so long is one of the reasons why this method is used. You may be wondering why Lead is in Zircon, so let me explain. Zircon has small traces of radioactive Uranium in it and this Uranium is similar enough to Zirconium, where Zircon gets its name, that it can take Zirconium's place when the mineral is forming. This Uranium then radioactively decays into Lead, which means the more Lead in a certain piece of Zircon, the older that Zircon is. This makes sense because the older the Zircon is the more time it has to produce lead. The age is then determined by using the half life of radioactive Uranium and comparing it to the ratio of Lead to Uranium. If the ratio is in Lead's favor, then it is older than a ratio in Uranium's favor because it hasn't decayed yet. This can get complicated due to the fact that there are 2 kinds of decay, 235U to 207Pb which has a half-life of 701 million years, and 238U to 206Pb which has a half life of 4.47 billion years old.
Now for the fun part, the analogies. First off, if we had one piece of paper for each year that the Earth has existed and put them in a single stack, that stack would be 50.86 times taller than Mount Everest. The oldest person that ever lived, Jeanne Calment, lived for 3861561600 seconds when rounded to the nearest day. It would have taken her 20.24 more years for the number of seconds she lived to equal the number of years the Earth has existed. Usain Bolt can run at a speed of almost 45 km/h, if he were to run 4.5 billion milometers, it would still take him 100 hours.  Mind still not blown? Well here is one last comparison.  If we had a single grain of sand for each year the Earth has existed, then it would way 2700 kilograms, or as much as 2 hippopotamuses. Mind still not blown? Well here is one last comparison.

How Can we Help the Earth: Part 1

Five ideas that you can use to help the Earth:

  • Collect water that you normally waste, such as the cold water at the beginning of a shower, and use it for something such as cleaning dishes or watering plants.
  • Recycle everything you think can be recycled, the plant can actually separate the trash from recyclables. However, recycling everything would be an extreme, so just recycle everything that you think can actually be recycled.
  • Use more gas efficient cars. Don't buy trucks just to look cool, buy cars that are practical and you will use for their intended purpose. A normal car is for travel, and minivan is for travel with a large group, a truck is for transporting heavy materials even in rough terrain, etc.
  • Hang dry clothes to save electricity once and a while. It is effective, natural, and less noisy.
  • Don't rinse your toothbrush before use, it is not necessary and is just a waste of water.

Population of the Earth: How to fix it

The last two posts went over the problems of overpopulation and what overpopulation is in general. Now this is the post that you have all been waiting for. How on Earth do we fix all this? No pun intended.
The first problem was a lack of resources, or a lack of sustainable resources. Some possible solutions include:

  • Cut down on meat products due to the fact that it is an extremely inefficient source of food. We give pigs, cattle, chickens, etc way more food than we get out of them.
  • Use forms of sustainable energy like solar and wind energy, and make them as efficient as possible. Also, using more forms of sustainable energy, such as burning trash.
  • Be less wasteful. Sure some things just become unusable at times, but most of the things we throw away could still have use or could have been recycled. That chip bag can carry more than chips, just clip it closed, that wrapper can be used as a quick note card or can wrap something else in a pinch, and that diaper you can, well, that you should probably throw away.
The next problem that was brought up was the lack of space and killing nature. Some possible solutions for that include:

  • Just stop dumping all of our trash into other places. Again, we can burn a lot of the trash for energy anyway in a way that is less pollutant than coal.
  • Just stop wanting more space. First, we do not need to take up more surface area on the the Earth, we can just build up, build our buildings taller.the only place this may be an issue is in a location that has frequent Second, we have plenty of space to begin with, people just need  to be more efficient with the space we have been given by the Earth.
  • Especially stop taking land from endangered species. This does not mean taking land from ANY species is good, but taking territory from an endangered one could drive t to extinction.
The last problem was uncontrollable things, assuming the Earth becomes overpopulated such as war, disease and famine. Some possible solutions are:
  • Hope science is advanced enough to create new vaccines and medicines for new diseases.
  • Force everyone to go vegetarian in order to maximize food efficiency. This also means wasting food would be illegal.
  • Hope that everyone decides to work together instead of resorting to panic. Panic and anger are what starts war, without panic and replacing it with cooperation will minimize war possibilities.
Keep in mind, these are not the only solutions, these are just some. If you all would like to google these topics yourself feel free to do so, but don't worry to much. It will be decades until we REALLY need to find a solution to overpopulation, but it is never to late to start.

Tech to Reconnect: The Future of Exploring Nature

Again this isn't he post you were most likely expecting, but don't worry the third part to the overpopulation series will be out tomorrow. This post is about something that I learned about as recently as yesterday. I found the idea interesting and similar to mine, accept theirs was more formal and based on new technologies, whereas mine was based on existing and established technologies.
Tech to Reconnect interesting and innovative in many ways. For starters, it rhymes which I personally think is clever, but that's just me. Second, it uses something that originally was thought to damage the environment, technology, and using it to influence people to appreciate nature more. It is a great idea that will hopefully cause people to see the world in a new way, without having to leave their home. However, many of the technologies are also interactive with nature, so one can also leave their home for a more interactive experience than ever.
Some of the new technologies or interactive technologies are:

  • The climate leaf, which measures temperature, humidity, and light on a leaf shaped wooden tablet.
  • The mask that allows people to see the world from a bats perspective.
  • A bird house that allows people to keep track of bird nesting habits.
  • A Oculus Rift that gives feed from a laptop on top of a 15 foot tall giraffe shaped tower that simulates the perspective of a giraffe.
These are just a few of the several ideas that are being created. The program is a revolutionary idea and could not happen at a better time. This event could not have come at a better time. It is the time where we as the human race have the technology to give people the experiences that this program is attempting to give. However, it is also the time where the environment is in dire need of saving, and this could be the perfect way to do it. It is merging the world of technology and the wold of nature in a way that is not destructive, something that is rarely done. It is using something that people like, technology, in order to train them to treasure nature. It is very similar to how people use food to train dogs into doing tricks. Lastly, just like not every dog can be trained, not every human will change their views on how they should treat the environment, but hopefully that is a very small portion of the population.
If you would like to learn more about Tech to Reconnecet, then you can visit the website at http://www.techtoreconnect.org/. There is an event at the San Diego Zoo on August 13,2015 and an event at the Safari Park on September 10, 2015 after hours.

Population of the Earth: The Problems

There are a lot of potential problems that come with overpopulation. These problems range from natural to human created disasters. Some problems will be easier to solve than others, but the solutions are coming in the third and final post.  So without further ado, let's get into the problems with overpopulation.
Let's be honest, people want stuff, and the more people that there are to want stuff, the more stuff is being exhausted. This brings us to problem number one, running out of resources. The problem with resources is sustainability. There is no doubt in my mind we could create a way to produce enough food, energy, and water to save humanity for a short period of time, but it will not be sustainable. Wind power and solar power at the current state can not supply about 10 billion people with power, nor can our current production of food feed 10 billion people, unless we all go vegetarian. Not only that, but all the raw materials we use to make everyday objects will deplete at some point. With more people using raw materials, the rate at which we run out of resources will be exponential.
Now, space does not count as a resource because there is enough of it. In fact, if all humans stood side by side, shoulder to shoulder, we could fit in LA. That is right, we can all fit in a single city if we REALLY wanted to. The problem with space is that we seem to want a lot of it, even though we don't need it. We are taking the space that other living things need and that is, to put things simply, bad. we share this planet with millions of other species, and we are losing between 200 to 2000 of those species each year. That is about .01% to .1% of the 2 million known species annually. Not only that, but we produce a lot of waste that needs to be put somewhere. We will eventually just destroy all the natural environment to create more space so we can pollute more, but without nature the pollution will destroy our planet even faster. Lastly, our existing space is polluted and filthy, and we don't like that, so we usually through our trash and pollution into the ocean, which ruins that environment.
This brings me to my last topic, the natural catastrophes. This includes famine, disease, and war. You may be thinking that war is not natural, but it is in my opinion. It is something that has always and will always occur throughout all of human history, it can not be prevented indefinitely, and with more people comes more casualties. Basically, with more people who can potentially get mad, the more violence will break out. This can eventually lead to war, but much bigger wars with more people and more devastating weapons. Famine can also lead to war, with different countries fighting over food supplies and farming grounds. Lastly is disease. Disease will basically be a Black Plague 2.0. It will be more people closely packed together, with drugs that over time have slowly lost effectiveness, and most of the population susceptible to diseases do to famine.
All in all, the problems caused by overpopulation will be devastating. Now, don't get me wrong, I am not saying don't have children, but I am saying we have to change. Here is the first solution, give Africa and India a steady supply of contraceptives, because most of the children in those areas are caused by a lack of proper protection. This will help the world's population growth tremendously because those are the two fastest growing areas in the world, and there is an easy solution.

Follow on twitter at Planet Earth and visit the Facebook page at Let's Give The World A Chance.

Next blog will  talk about the solutions to overpopulation if we don't fix it before it is to late. Don't forget to like, rate, and subscribe, oh wait, this isn't YouTube. Anyway, stay green Earth, see you all next post.

P.S. That last part is my new catch phrase, if you have any thoughts post them in the comments, I would be happy to read them.

The Earth is our Home

This is not the post I said I was going to do, that one is coming in a few days. This one is just to create appreciation for our Earth. So let's get on with it.
Earth is our home. It is where we took our first breath, took our first steps, played our first game, lost our first tooth, went to school for the first time, and where we had all of our great experiences. Every single person or animal who has ever existed has called Earth their home. In fact, the odds of you drinking at least 1 molecule of water that passed through a dinosaur per day is almost 100%, because things have been living here for millions of years.
However, we don't take care of it as if it were our house. It is easy to let something get dirty and blame one of the 7 billion other people that live on this Earth. However, just because it is everyone's home doesn't make it everyone else's problem. If everyone has this mind set the world is going to become a pile of filth really soon.

If everyone would just look around them and clean their room, the world would be a much cleaner and more beautiful place. Not their actual material room of course, although at least that is a step in the right direction, but their room on this Earth. Look around your community and think, how can I make this place better. Your community is your room and you share it with thousands of other people, so clean it up together. If every room in our house called Earth is cleaned, Earth as a whole will be clean, even if each room was cleaned by a different group of people person.

"Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not."

Population of the Earth: Includes Population Clock

Our population is growing at 2.5 people per second. That is 150 people per minute, 9000 people per hour, 216000 people per day, 1512000 per week, and 78624000 per year. Don't even get me started on Leap Year. Anyway, that is a LOT of increase in our population. We have less than 2 people dying a second, and 4 babies being born each second. This is what led to the 2.5 population growth per second. That is why I didn't say the number of people being added to the world every second, because if I said that it the growth would have been 4 people per second.
Our growth is exponential. It took us about 50000 years to go from one human to one billion. However, we grew the other 6 billion in about 2 centuries. We hit 7 billion people around 2011 or 2012, its a little hard to calculate when there are SO MANY PEOPLE ON THE PLANET, and we hit 1 billion at around 1804. The cause of this sudden population boom was the Industrial Revolution, which is the main cause of all of humanities successes in the last 200 years, but also the cause of many destructive human made forces. It allowed us to use new technologies to provide people with more "stuff", more jobs, and more food using a lot less land and manpower. It produced more jobs because of the large amount of new industries that were being built, even though they all used less manpower. Our rate of increase is beginning to lower, which is good, but it isn't lowering by much.
At the rate we are going we are going to reach 10 to 11 billion people by 2050, which is a growth of about 3 to 4 billion people in 35 years. The most populous countries are China at 1.4 billion people, India at 1.3 billion people, United States of America at 325 million people, Indonesia at 256 million people, Brazil at 204 million people, Pakistan at 188 million people, Nigeria at 184 million people, Bangladesh at 161 million people, Russia at 142 million people, and Japan at 127 million people.
This brings up several problems that I will go into more detail on in my next post. First, is sustainability, there is no doubt in my mind that we could produce food for 10 to 11 billion people at 2050, I am just worried it will completely destroy what is left of the environment at that point. Second, the amount of power we will need to supply people with power, which can be done, but again will destroy the environment. Next is the water supply going dry. There are several others that but that is for another time.
The worst part about the growth is, the growth is happening in the wrong places. The population is growing in places that can barely support themselves let alone a population boom. These places include many parts of both Africa and India. They are growing because medicine is improving, so more babies are surviving past infancy, but there is less contraception. This means same amount of babies with less casualties, which leads to a giant rise in temperature.
Here is a link to the population clock which contains other information on the growth of our population if you are interested. http://www.worldometers.info/world-population/ .
There will be other posts on this topic soon based on the problems that come with overpopulation and possible solutions. Some solutions may be a bit controversial, obvious, or far fetched, but they are still ideas. If you have any ideas I would love to hear them in the comments. Follow on twitter at Planet Earth and visit the Facebook page at Let's Give The World A Chance.

Did you know: the Future of Garbage is Power

Mmmm, garbage. The thing nobody wants to or cares to think about. It is the stuff we have already used and the stuff we don't want to see again. That used diaper, see you later. The food in the fridge that has gone bad, adios. All the other disgusting trash that we want to get out of our sight, goodbye. However, these things still have uses left, and not through recycling. We can use the garbage for actual power by burning it.
First, there are two ways we can use trash for energy, one that is in use today, and a potentially more effective way that is still in testing.

  • First there are the Wast to Energy facilities that basically burn garbage as if it were coal. It is burned and the heat produces steam that then powers the turbines which create electricity. It is not used in many countries that still have plenty of space for landfills, such as the US, but in countries in more limited land, like the United Kingdom, these facilities are quite common. It creates less pollution than you might expect, saves space, and pollutes less than trash sitting in a landfill. The last statement is true because the trash not only leaks chemicals into the soil and our water supply, but it also emits Methane which is a more dangerous greenhouse gas than Carbon Dioxide.
  • Next we have the landfill that is being tested. Bio reactors use bacteria to break down trash through either aerobic or anaerobic. Aerobic bio reactors use bacteria that require oxygen and anaerobic bacteria do not require oxygen. The problem is the produces a large amount of landfill gas that is harmful to the environment. BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!!! Landfill gas is burnable, so we can burn it to produce more energy and limit pollution, but for some reason we are not doing that.
We need to make more of these two kinds of landfills to save space and help the environment. Both the planet and humans win. However, it is not a priority to many people so these kind of landfills are not being built, but we can make it a priority. If enough people become knowledgeable about this subject and talk about it on social media these new landfills will be created and replace the old ones.

Fun Fact: Americans generate 226 million metric tons of trash a day, that's about 2 kilograms of trash daily.
