So what is the Butterfly effect. This is important to define because it is commonly confused with the Domino effect, and they ARE similar, but have a few important differences.
- The domino effect is when something happens that directly causes something else nearby, which causes something else, which causes something else, etc. It is a linear causation of similar events that makes it clear to see what caused what and what will happen next. The severity of the effects rarely change, and if they do, it is by very little. It was originated during the Cold War when people believed one communist country would cause its neighbors to become communist, which would cause even more neighbors to become communist, etc.
- The Butterfly effect is when where a small and localized change causes a drastic change, or effect, in another location. For example, the flap of a butterflies wings causing a hurricane on the other side of the globe. Clearly, this one isn't literally true, or else we would be having hurricanes all the time and all over the place, but the idea is still relevant. It was a part of Chaos Theory and is usually used to refer negative things.
The Butterfly effect is everywhere. It is in everything we see, in everything we do, in everyone we interact with, and will be in everything in the future. However, it can also be used to refer to positive things. For example, a small 150 view blog could inspire at least 1 person to make a real difference in the world, that person becomes famous and inspires millions more, and those millions of people get together and solve a large percentage of the world's problems. I know it is a bit ambitious, but if you are going to dream, might as well dream big.
