How we can Help the Planet: Part 8

Five ideas you can use to help the Earth:

  • Make your own coffee. Sure it doesn't seem like much, but if no one bought coffee cups that would be millions of less cups being thrown away each day. Sure there is still the problem of washing the mugs, but that brings me to my next tip.
  • Using the cold water before the shower to wash the dishes. The cold water that usually goes down the drain you can use to rinse your dishes instead of wasting it. It may seem dirty, but it is the same water that your dishwasher uses and if you use soap the water will be as good as new .
  • On the topic of showers, taking shorter showers couldn't hurt. I mean you get to save water and be more efficient with your time, its a win/win.
  • Speaking of saving, try donating any helpful organization. It can be for the environment, for people who are less fortunate, for a hospital studying cancer, or anything as long as it makes a positive impact on the world.
  • Lastly, speaking of the environment, try to plant a new plant something on your property. It can be as simple as a flower, although you should probably plant more than just one flower, it can be  a little bush/hedge, or it can be as large as a tree.

How we can Help the Planet: Part 7

Five ideas you can use to help the Earth:

  • Keeping track of where you go throughout the day and when you go there. This will allow you to figure out which things you can get done in one run, like grocery shopping and then clothes shopping if the two stores are close. Also, you can determine if any activities are unnecessary and do them less frequently, as well as figure out activities you are missing throughout the day, like exercise.
  • Don't focus on your personal gain if it affects something in a negative way. The biggest examples of this are oil companies that care more about money and monopoly of the product than about the environment. It is true that we are not at that extreme, but something I am sure we have all been guilty of at one time is littering because you don't want to carry around your trash until you find a trashcan.
  • Take the time to learn about a topic that interests you. This can be taken as both a way to help the environment or just yourself through education. Education is huge in most issues because it gets rid of  one of the main causes of any conflict, ignorance. If more people were curious and looked into global warming when the temperature was first starting to rise, maybe we would have made a bigger effort to solving the problem earlier and prevented our current problems.
  • Donate. By donating, you kill two birds with one stone. NOTE: Killing birds is not something I want you doing, it is just a saying. Anyway, it helps people who are less fortunate and it keeps people from wasting. If you are not motivated to donate by those two factors, its tax deductible too, so there is really no reason to not donate.
  • Go vegetarian a day a week. It takes 4.5 pounds of feed to cause a chicken to grow 1 pound. Beef eaters use 160 times the amount of land as a vegetarian because of all the space it takes to grow livestock as well as grow the food for livestock. that isn't even getting into some of the biggest issues. I know bacon is delicious, but sometimes you have to chose what is better for others than what is better for yourself. I mean, you don't have to go completely meat free, just cut back or have a meatless day or two.

League of Legends, the World, Drastic Changes

It is no surprise to people that things can go pretty south in the blink of an eye. It has happened several times in human history, most of which stem from natural disasters, but many others resulting from human involvement. Things are the same in video games too, more specifically League of Legends because that is the game that is being focused on here. Not only that, but things, even though the negative effects and positive effects might not be instantaneous, they are exponential and cause create disturbances in the environment or in the game.
In League of Legends, things can spiral out of control very quickly. One lost baron fight and all of a sudden you are behind. Got drag stolen and you don't get the fifth buff you desperately needed and the enemy is able to completely turn the game around because of it. Winning a fight and then getting turned on and dying in a matter of seconds. Winning a game and all of a sudden having a teammate disconnect. Or start off Worlds strong just to go a total 0-9 in the final day of groups (NA teams).
In League of Legends, there are gradual and exponential differences too. Start missing a few cs every few waves and your opponent gradually gets more ahead.  Play a team of early game champions and watch helplessly as the game slowly transitions into the late game. Get into an argument with a teammate that slowly gets out of control until someone leaves or refuses to help. Start getting lag spikes which causes your performance to slowly drop (always at the worst times too because your internet wants you to lose).
Now for the big question, what does this have to do with the World? Well the world has been around for billions of years, and over this time there are bound to be some gradual and nearly instant changes that changed the world.
Before I proceed, I classified instantaneous changes as anything that take a decade or shorter, and anything longer than that is a gradual and exponential change. Other instantaneous changes include events that are so drastic that the amount of time it took to take place is unbelievable, like mass extinctions.

Examples of changes that happened instantly:

  • Dinosaurs' extinction
  • The city of Pompeii being frozen in time by an erupting volcano (Mount Vesuvius).
  • Black Death wiping out a third of the European population in three years. As well as other epidemics.
  • Mass Extinctions
  • The Haitian Earthquake which effected 3.5 million people in a matter of minutes (220000 of those people were deaths).
  • World Wars 1, 2, and the Revolutionary War (many consider it the first real world war)

Examples of changes that happened over time:
  • Ice Ages
  • The continental shifts that move the continents from Pangaea to the continents' positions we know today.
  • Evolution of species
  • The advancement of Human technology.
  • Global warming.
Just so you have a perspective of how much global warming has affected us and the time period. The increase was about .8 degrees Celsius, or 1.5 degrees Fahrenheit, in a little over 100 years.

It is true that it is hard to stop many of these things because they are caused by natural disasters, but there are still many we can stop. We can prevent climate change, wars, epidemics (thanks to your current technology). we can even prevent some natural disasters like volcanic eruptions, because they show signs before erupting, and hurricanes, because they are seen before they actually affect the population, by evacuating the residents and preparing the area to minimize damage.
Long story short, both League of Legends and the Earth are made up of several small events that exponentially grow as well as nearly instantaneous events. And even though some are out of our control, like teammates in League of Legends and natural disaster on Earth, we can still do our best to minimize the negative events that take place.

League of Legends, the World, and the Butterfly Effect

I am sure you have all had that game where everything starts off bad and it just gets worse and worse as time goes on. The enemy team just gets further and further ahead and there is nothing you can do to stop it. No matter how hard you try, you just can't recover from the first blood you gave up in bot lane when you were trying to make a "lcs big play". On the other hand, you have probably been on the winning side of that scenario too .Same basic concept in life right? You do one wrong thing, do one assignment wrong, say one wrong thing to your parents, don't fully stop at a stop sign, etc. All of those little things as well as the billions of other little events that could happen in your everyday life could have a huge impact on your life. It could completely change the path you are going down both in a positive or negative way. It all has to do with the Butterfly effect and its effect on bot league and real life.
So what is the Butterfly effect. This is important to define because it is commonly confused with the Domino effect, and they ARE similar, but have a few important differences.

  • The domino effect is when something happens that directly causes something else nearby, which causes something else, which causes something else, etc. It is a linear causation of similar events that makes it clear to see what caused what and what will happen next. The severity of the effects rarely change, and if they do, it is by very little. It was originated during the Cold War when people believed one communist country would cause its neighbors to become communist, which would cause even more neighbors to become communist, etc.
  • The Butterfly effect is when where a small and localized change causes a drastic change, or effect, in another location. For example, the flap of a butterflies wings causing a hurricane on the other side of the globe. Clearly, this one isn't literally true, or else we would be having hurricanes all the time and all over the place, but the idea is still relevant. It was a part of Chaos Theory and is usually used to refer negative things.
I have already explained how it affects League of Legends  by using the example of giving up first blood and having your lane snowball out of control. However, how does this relate to the world? Well that is a very simple answer. It affects us everywhere. Every decision ever made has led us to where we are today and society continues to change based on people decisions, whether the changes are good or bad is up to society. For example, the discovery of paper was cool at first, but now we are cutting down billions of trees a year, a lot of which is going to paper. The invention of the car was revolutionary and allowed people to get from place to place faster without needing the train, but several decades later it is the lead cause of global warming. It even affects us in real life. Deciding to do drugs one time could lead to a life of drug addiction, giving up in a subject in school could lead to a limited future,  eating your problems away could lead to obesity, etc.
The Butterfly effect is everywhere. It is in everything we see, in everything we do, in everyone we interact with, and will be in everything in the future.  However, it can also be used to refer to positive things. For example, a small 150 view blog could inspire at least 1 person to make a real difference in the world, that person becomes famous and inspires millions more, and those millions of people get together and solve a large percentage of the world's problems. I know it is a bit ambitious, but if you are going to dream, might as well dream big.

The Martian, Facts about Mars: Part 1

Mars is one of the 2 main places people think about when they hear "space colonization", The other one being the Moon. It is a very interesting place filled with several things a lot of people probably didn't know about it. So let's get right into it with five fun facts about Mars, that I hope you don't already know:

  • First, Mare has about as much landmass as the Earth. Think about it, the Earth is much bigger than Mars, Mars has only 15% Earth's volume and 10% of Earth's total mass, but the Earth is made up of two-thirds water, so the amount of land that we can live on is much less than you would think for a planet as big as Earth.
  • As of September 2014, there have been 40 missions sent to Mars, with only 18 being successful. Many of them failed because they were sent before space travel was at its peak and moon expeditions were risky, which meant Mars missions at that time would have been a lot harder than it is today with our new technologies
  • A year on Mars is 300 days longer than it is here on Earth. Mars is much further away from the sun, which means it must travel a much longer orbit, and this isn't even including the speed at which it orbits at, which is also slower than Earth's.
  • Mars has 62.5% less gravity than Earth. It you want to go on a diet, I would recommend going to mars because it will make you feel a lot lighter. Not only that, but basketball would be a breeze and the hoop would have to be made two to 3 times higher. This also was believed to cause a problem for plants due to some of their short roots, but it was simulated and it did not end up being a problem after all.
  • The temperature on Mars ranges from -284 degrees F (-140 degrees C) to 86 degrees F (30 degrees C). This is due to the fact that it is further away from the sun, but due to its similar tilt, it has different seasons that all very in temperature greatly. Not only that, but the seasons are twice as long because the year is twice as long, so there are a lot of unpleasant days on Mars. However, I am sure that by the time we start colonizing Mars there will be an AC and a heater strong enough to make those climates more hospitable, Also, the temperature will naturally increase if we colonize because the atmosphere will increase in density and trap in some heat.
